The little man

Here are some photos of the little boy, taken by our photographer, Joe Duty. Caleb had to come up to work with me for a moment last week, and Joe snapped a couple of pictures while he was here.

Our publisher's wife, Lesa, is in the background. She was attempting to get Caleb to walk to her. Unfortunately, Caleb wasn't interested in showing off his new skills that day.

First hair cut

Caleb had his first haircut yesterday afternoon. I'll let the pictures tell the story ...

I have some shaggy hair.

Mommy's waiting for the crying to start.

Never mind — he loves this!

Caleb's first "little boy" cut.

I'm a big boy like you, Daddy!

Mornings

It's no secret that I LOVE sleep. Getting out of bed each morning is the biggest challenge I face each day.
Daniel has battled with it. He tries to sweetly wake me up at least 10 times each morning, but he usually leaves the house frustrated — I am still buried under layers of blankets and pillows as he slams the door.
But this morning was different, and for no particular reason. I stumbled out of bed a little easier. I opened the curtains in the bedroom to let a little light in. I took a second to watch the cows munch grass on the other side of the fence.
Caleb also woke up in a good mood. He made sweet babbling sounds as he waited for me to come get him out of his crib, quite a change from his usual screaming. He let me change his diaper and clothes before requesting his morning bottle. He laughed and kicked his feet when Ashby (our newly acquired outdoor cat) greeted us outside.
Maybe I'll rethink my attitude about mornings.

Tangible memories

I am beginning work on a gift I am giving my parents and Daniel's parents for Caleb's first birthday.
They've helped us so much this first year, as well as in preparation for this first year, and I don't know if we would have made it this far without them.
So, I decided to make a picture memory book for them using Walmart's photo Web site.
My goal is to show Caleb's progress by using a photo from each day that I took pictures. I think it's going to turn out well.
Last night, as I was scrolling through 10-months worth of pictures, I was amazed at how much our little boy has changed in such a short time. In the beginning, he looked like a shriveled, mini-man. And I can point out at what point he started looking like Caleb — May 5. I took some pictures of him in a little baseball onesie while he swung his arms and kicked his feet on his play mat. He smiled slightly for one of the pictures. So cute!

My new goal for the year, and the many years to come, is to take pictures of our little family every day. Everything progresses so quickly, and pictures are one of the few ways we can make our memories tangible. We can go back and relive that moment for a second.
Here's one of my favorite pictures ever. It's from Erin's engagement party – this was before I drank 900 glasses of wine.

My little walker/Mini-vacation summary

Caleb has quickly bored with crawling and has moved on to trying to walk.
It is the most adorable event of the day.
He'll pull himself up using the coffee table legs, bang the coaster on the table top a couple of times (when did I stop caring about the care of my furniture?), then turn my way. He'll get the biggest look of happy determination on his little face, and he'll take about five steps before he falls to the floor.
I know it's only a matter of time before he's taking 10 steps, then 20 steps.

Over the weekend, we took a trip to Amarillo and Borger. Daniel and I haven't been back to Frank Phillips College since the semester Daniel graduated, way back in the spring of 2002. We took a walk around campus, and introduced Caleb to the baseball field where Daniel pitched many a baseball game. Caleb even threw a couple of pitches.

OK, so maybe he just stood there with the baseball in his hands.

We went to the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, and found it very interesting. Caleb did, too.

I'm really an adult?

Well, it's fully 2010, and I'm just now getting around to writing something about the New Year.
I can't help but think back on the decade and marvel at everything that has happened in 10 short years.
I rang in 2000 at Marina's house as an 18-year-old — still in high school, just months away from graduating, with no clue where life would lead.
Now, I'm a wife and a mother, I have a real job, I have a dog and cat, and I have a car payment.
Here's a quick run down of the highlights of my life, year by year:
2000 — graduated high school, went to Frank Phillips College in Borger to play volleyball
2001 — made it through my first year of college without any huge mishaps, although I did gain 15 pounds in the final two months of the spring semester; watched the World Trade Center towers fall on TV; started dating Daniel
2002 — began my first semester at Texas A&M in January without Daniel; Daniel joined me in the summer
2003 — Heath joined us at College Station for some fun times
2004 — got my Aggie Ring April 22, got my engagement ring April 24; graduated May 15; moved to Waxahachie in October to start my first real job
2005 — Married Daniel Aug. 6; moved to Lancaster in November
2006 — Heath graduated from Air Force basic training in July
2007 — Moved to Rhome, Daniel starts a new career and I start a new job
2008 — Found out I was pregnant in July
2009 — Caleb was born March 17; moved to Boyd in November
2010 — I made my first sopapilla cheesecake (it's early - I'm sure something bigger will come along)

It's insane how quickly time flies and things change.
